High Adventure by the Saltless Sea
Island-continent in the Saltless Sea. Avertice’s small number of harbours and rocky coastline have historically made it surprisingly defensible for its size, and a number of influential empires have begun there over the years. The last of these was the Empire of the Glory of Jost Steelarm, which collapsed roughly three hundred years ago.
Avertice’s central area is largely plainsland. Much of this was formerly agricultural but with the collapse of the Empire and subsequent drop in the island’s population large tracts of land have reverted to wilderness. Up to a third of the plains – mostly in the central portion of the island – are blighted and incapable of supporting most plant life. These regions, commonly referred to as the Gray Area – date from the destruction of the Empire, though the link between the two is neither confirmed nor understood. In the North-East is the ancient woodland known simply as the Forest, while in the North-West lies the mountain range known as Skund. Flowing between the two is Unar, the River of Flowers. Though much of the old Imperial road system has been torn up or otherwise destroyed, the major highways remain and comprise the main trade route for the region.
Villages and small towns still dot the plains, most of which are devoted to agriculture. Though the Fecund Peninsula is a major source of foodstuffs for the countries of the Saltless Sea, the fertile nature of its soil means that a number of crops cannot be grown there and it is these that the farmers of Avertice specialize in. Aside from the farm towns, the two major population centres on the continent are Port Rot and Port Ovkul. Most of the Avertice’ trade flows through the latter. Not known is the extent to which the continent’s non-human population centres – harshly repressed under the old Empire – have recovered in the last three hundred years.
