Western Lands

Though the trading ships of Gor sail to the West, their stories are considered suspect by many. Judicious consideration of their tales and those of the occasional Stormburg or more exotic crew to visit the Saltless Sea has yielded a number of tidbits that have a reasonable chance to be at least partially true, or at least entertaining:

  • Most Western ports are similar to those of the Saltless Sea, either mostly human like Gor or filled with any number of different peoples, like Port Ovkul. Among the unusual ports are a heavily-forested one populated by elves, an underground city (with an underground harbour!) run by dwarves and tieflings, a rich trading town to the North in which all outsiders must wear blindfolds at all times and a peaceful island community of giants.
  • All agree on the existence of a great stone portal that either allows trade with the Shadowdark and the Feywild, or both. Where exactly this portal is, or whether it is located on the ocean or some distance inland, is the subject of some debate.
  • The great city of Mantwick has been destroyed by a monstrous beast from the sea, that now slumbers in the waters of Mantwick Bay.
  • Great boatloads of dragonborn sail the oceans, on a generations-long quest to recover certain artifacts and found a new nation.
  • Rumours of unique groups of pirates are popular and widespread. There are supposedly ships sailing the Western seas that are captained by a pig, Falen Demonblade, Falen Demonblade’s daughter and an inanimate stone oracle. There is supposed to be a ship that sails under the water, one crewed entirely by monkeys, one with a crew that wears no clothing and a whole fleet of tiny ships crewed by men the size of a thumb. There are the Holy Pirates of Kord, the Brotherhood of Madness (who steal timber and build their ships out of gold) and a little girl who leads a crew of ghostly maidens. It’s basically a wonder that any shipping at all gets through.
  • Something is happening in the Summertowns. Several of them are empty but none of the other Rimelanders will speak of why.
